Leisure is under more pressure than ever. Busy-busy-busy and then the corona is a frequently heard answer to the question 'How are you?'

People need time, but also space for free time, places where they can relax and enjoy the little free time they have.

A place where you can take your time, a small oasis of peace in a busy world. Of course, some municipalities, including Opwijk-Buggenhout, already have a number of places.

We invite you to walk along this walk well-known and lesser-known resting places, just look at the photos on this walk.

The spots that are NOT in the photos include: Hof ten Hemelrijk, the park on the St.Annasite, 't Trod with the play forest, the Hoppeveld, the bee hotel on the Hof Ten Hemelrijk, which can be seen on another walk, here we go for a walk to Buggenhout.

Opwijk is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. The municipality is located in the northwest of the province and has been merged with Mazenzele since 1977. Opwijk has more than 14,000 inhabitants.

The Buggenhoutbos is located in the municipality of Buggenhout in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Today's Buggenhout forest is a remnant of a vast forest complex of thousands of hectares. This complex was even part of the former Coal Forest, which covered the entire center of Belgium.

Nowhere in Flanders can you find as many sessile oaks as in the Buggenhoutbos. You can walk, cycle or exercise under a canopy of impressive oak trees. It is the perfect destination for relaxation and sports, for young and old.

The chapel is located on the edge of the forest. Hundreds of years ago it was mainly surrounded by beech trees, which is why the domain got its name. In the First World War most of it disappeared and today the forest is best known for its imposing sessile oaks.

All that cycling and discovery makes you thirsty (and hungry). On the edge of the forest there are not only trees but also three brasseries: In De Groene Wandeling, brasserie Foreest and brasserie Het Middelpunt.Last but not least: in the Buggenhoutbos it is also allowed to bring your own picnic. In the old part there is a 6 meter long picnic table and a shelter on the 10 hectare play area under the sessile oaks!

On this walk are B&B located where you can spend the night.

Hof ten Houte https://www.merchtem.be/product/394/hof-ten-houte

The tower of the Hof Ten Houte, which was recently thoroughly renovated, dates from the end of the 13th century.

The Ten Houte district was once the birthplace of Peizegem. It was strategically located along the main road from Hainaut to the Scheldt (den Briel), on the border between Brabant and Flanders.
It was the last post before entering the large Buggenhoutbos, a last stopping place for the travelers who could no longer reach den Briel before nightfall. Ten Houte used to be a fortified fortress, completely surrounded by ramparts. The tower is a keep or residential tower. Donjons played an important role in the daily life of the Middle Ages; They were the economic, political, judicial and symbolic centre of the glory.
But first of all, the keep was the lord's home where he lived his family life and received people.
