The Luysterborg is a very varied forest area. In addition to "old forest", you will also find plots with young hardwood, which was planted in the late 1990s on former agricultural land. A beautiful walking area with a shelter.

Fauna and flora

The ring pond of De Luysterborg is a valuable water feature with many aquatic plants and dragonflies. This is also where the rare crested salamander feels at home. In the older forest plots of De Luysterborg, the old, thick summer oaks stand out in particular. These mixed forests are beautifully structured, with many native trees (especially pedunculate oaks, birches and Scots pines), a rich undergrowth (of shrubs, ferns and blackberries) and a lot of dead wood. A paradise for woodpeckers and tree cleavers!

Through the ages

The Luysterborg is 26 ha in size. Most of the forest plots can already be found on the Ferraris map of 1774. However, the history of the domain goes back even further, to 1294. Then it was mentioned for the first time as "Luysterborck". In 1782, the Gasthuiszusters van Turnhout became the owners of the Luysterborg, which thus came into the hands of the OCMW of Turnhout. In 1997, the municipality of Beerse and the Flemish government bought De Luysterborg.
