Stumbling stones WALK 6,2KM

A stumbling stone is a cobblestone-shaped memorial stone that is placed in the footpath to commemorate the victims of National Socialism during WW II.

In Belgium, the first stumbling stones were placed in 2007. In 2019, the Cultural Heritage Working Group took the initiative to place such stumbling stones in Dendermonde as well. To a request to the city council to cooperate with this project, a positive answer was given. In Dendermonde, the victims turned out to be exclusively political prisoners, belonging to various resistance groups. In the city archives and from descendants of these resisters, information was and still is collected about these persons and their last place of residence. About thirty names have now been selected.

Stumbling blocks in 2019

On 9 October 2019, the first nine stumbling stones were placed for Dendermonde by the German artist Gunter Demnig:
