Route Description:

You start at the Church of “Krokegem”, directly opposite the church (at the traffic lights) you cross the very busy “Dendermondsesteenweg” and go right and then left into “Tomdries”. This old church road leads you to “Kelestraat” which you follow right to then go left at the dangerous “Gentsesteenweg” that you cross. You now follow a field path. This leads you to the “Buda”, where you take a right. Between house number 14 and 12 you will find left a path that brings you to “Keiweg”. At a picturesque house number 18, you go left. Between meadows and fields, you’ll find a road that goes downhill at the end left. On clear days, there is a beautiful view over the “Pajottenland” at the end right continue on this road and you cross “Notstraat”, you follow this road straight ahead to reach “Assestraat”. Here you cross the regional road and take the street next to the church, “Kapellestraat”, which you descend; at the next intersection right past house number 35 you follow left a path that leads to “Kravaalbos”. This path first ascends, with a pond to your left at the front of the woods, then it descends. You will emerge onto a main road that you continue to follow right. Exiting the woods, you go right and then left. Here you follow the country road leading to “Mazenzele”. You will come out on “Bosstraat” where you go right. You are now on “Schaapheuzel”. Continue left next to a concrete company. Now you come to the “Dendermondsesteenweg” which you cross to enter “Vossestraat” straight ahead until the first turn to the right right. You continue on this road to the first turn there left you follow this road to the next turn there right onto “Koereit”. You follow the rising road until you have a dirt road on your right and left here you take left this dirt road you follow to the first path on the left left that runs through the woods. You follow this path all the way up so that you exit the forest; here you take the path right which is a path that circles the forest, you follow the path to the first turn there left a road between the fields brings you to “Koereit” here left at the next dirt road right the first dirt road left to the next dirt road right behind the gardens to end up on the Oude Dendermondsebaan. Follow the footpath right to cross the street at house number 20, via the footpath you reach the church square again.

Sights:

Church of Krokegem, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Built by the parishioners themselves and consecrated in 1949.

Borgstad, a true fortification. At that time, this was a strategic stronghold of the Romans and probably even during the time of the Nervii. Numerous finds of Roman origin have historical value.

Hof ter lange Bomen, mentioned as early as 1400.

Saint Hubertus Church, dates from 1866. In the 14th century, the Brabant dukes built a hunting chapel at this location in honor of Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of this parish.

Kravaalbos, this forest is only a small part of what remained of the former Askerholt, a vast medieval forest area that was donated to the Abbey of Affligem by the Lords of Brabant according to a ducal decree in 1086.

Burnt Court, 19th century, formerly “Hof van Carteloo”, former property of the Abbey of Affligem. During wartime, this court provided horse and cart to transport the Brabant standard, kept in the Abbey of Affligem, to the battlefield.

Kartelobos, is a beautiful, ancient deciduous forest, primarily with beech, summer oak, ash, and willow trees. The edge of the forest is about 75 m high; the views are beautiful, including Brussegem, Brussels (Heizel), and much further.
