The nature reserve of the Avelgemse Scheldemeersen is located between the old railway, the Scheldt, the Rijt and the Rugge. The region is divided into different names or meanders cut from the Scheldt (17th-18th century) such as the Marcel Deweer name, the Dirty name, the Coupure des Prairies and Miracoupure. The creation of the Scheldt valley dates back to the Ice Age due to strong melting currents of icy water that caused sand and gravel deposits. Departure from Meersstraat 45, Avelgem, parking is possible at the company (at the junction on the right). The Nature Education Centre is located further down the dirt road (we pass it last on the walking route). Unfortunately, the hiking map (on the website and the leaflet which is available free of charge on the information panel) has not been adapted to the arrows in the field and this on the red road. There are three routes: Natuurleerpad (green, 6 km), Dry trail (?) (red, 6 km) and Tussen Rijt en Schelde (blue, 7 km). This GPS walk is a combination of paths with a small piece of slow road to bypass the passage in the Ruggestraat.
