The village of Membach is located just southwest of Eupen, on the northern edge of the huge Hertogenwoud. In this forest, the Gileppe River was dammed. A few decades ago, the capacity of the reservoir was increased to 25 million cubic meters of water. There is a walking trail around this large lake.
The trail winds through this part of Hertogenwoud, which stretches between Eupen and the reservoir, on both sides of the N620, one of Belgium's most scenic roads.
This road connects, through the forest, the N68 (Eupen - Baraque Michel - Malmedy) to the N629 (Eupen - Jalhay).
Halfway, you reach the famous Place Chêne du rendez-vous, where there was a very old oak at the crossroads of forest roads, with parking. Forestry has placed an information sign and marked a number of roads in a walk-friendly manner (but designations could be updated in March 2004).
