Two villages, one end of town (Neder-Over-Heembeek)

This Brukselbinnenstebuiten à la carte walk will take you through Neder-Over-Heembeek, a somewhat forgotten corner of the capital. And a characteristic example of a village that has been swallowed up in a city. Since their appearance in the twelfth^century , the villages of Neder-Heembeek and Over-Heembeek were oriented towards agriculture. Following the development of the Willebroek Canal in the^sixteenth century, a pleasure garden and second homes were built for the nobility. During the widening of the same Canal in the^nineteenth century and early twentieth^century, the industry also settled there. This is why, one hundred years later, the City of Brussels annexed the two entities united under the name of Neder-Over-Heembeek. Brussels has since nurtured great plans for the area, and yet the village has continued to live.
