Just an hour's drive from Brussels, just below Mons, lies this challenging hiking route of 21.6 km through the Borinage and partly along GR412 - Ouest Sentier des Terrils. A region of the former mines between the city of Mons and the French border.
Since the 12th century, humanity has been extracting coal here, with as many as 32 working coal mines at the end of the 19th century. In 1976, the last mine in the Borinage was closed. As of 2021, some buildings have been preserved, but this area offers numerous terrils, which we are trying to connect through narrow paths.
