TURF PIT HIKING TRAIL
Ten kilometres of walking and almost constantly along the water: that is the secret of the Turfput hiking trail in Berlare. The green paths take you through the landscape that was sculpted by peat cutters. They tackled the soil in Berlare to extract the peat layers from it. Their work left deep wells that are filled with water.
ONE OF THE LARGEST FLEMISH LAKES
Without the peat cutters, there would be no Donkmeer in Berlare. It is one of the largest lakes in Flanders and a third of the greenery around the lake is a protected nature reserve. A deep green panorama in which you can splash, sail or just enjoy the rippling water in peace.
The historic Scheldemeander is home to even more such lakes, such as the Turfput. From the 18th century it was excavated - entirely by hand. The elongated trousers are the largest of about fifty smaller ponds in Berlare Broek.
