On an exploration in the border area around Watou and the Heuvelland

A rolling route through the Heuvelland and on the Schreve. The route starts from Watou and mainly follows quiet roads.

Before climbing the legendary Kemmelberg, you can warm up your legs with the climb of the Zoetendaalstraat (avg. 3%, max. 10%), the Zoetzurendaal, the Scherpenberg (avg. 3%, max. 12%) and the Zavelaar (avg. 6.6%, max. 13%). Don’t forget to stop at the top of the Scherpenberg to enjoy the beautiful view. It is no coincidence that this is informally called "little Switzerland".

If, after all these hills, you’re not keen on tackling the steepest part of the Kemmelberg (23%!), you can turn right just before the cobblestones and detour around it.

After the Kemmelberg, your legs will get a bit of a rest. The route passes by the Spanbroekmolen, goes through Mesen - the smallest town in Belgium - and along the Christmas Truce Memorial. Here begins a fun stretch of Plugstreet towards the Ploegsteert Memorial.

From Dranouter to Westouter, there are several smaller (Schomminkelstraat) and a few sharper (Gildenstraat) climbs before returning to Watou along the border with France.
