Discover all benefitsDeparture: From Hasselt station: ‘De Lijn’ bus 38 to ‘Heers’ stop Muntelbeekstraat.
Parking (free): from Hasselt, direction Tongeren, Luikersteenweg, 1.3 km past the E313 motorway, turn right at the sign ‘St. Lambrechts-Herk 4’ km. - end of Muntelbeekstraat (in front of the electricity cabin).
The walk goes downhill to the valley of the Mombeek, which is followed upstream, and then ascends to the highest point of Hasselt, with views up to Borgloon and Tongeren.
Directions:
At the intersection, take a left onto the dead-end ‘Bekstraat’ over the bridge over the Mombeek. Turn left along the creek. After rainy days, it can be a bit muddy in places.
Always follow the waymarking with yellow arrow!
The Mombeek springs to the north of Tongeren and further forms the Herk.
To the south (between 10 and 200 meters), there runs, approximately parallel, a second arm.
The vegetation between the two has the less common name ‘struweel’, vegetation of various shrubs between 1 and 5 meters high. Also called ‘mantle’ at the forest edge.
The valley of the Mombeek contains more than 250 plant species, 90 bird species, and 20 different butterflies.
After 1.5 km, take the bridge on the left. Caution: cross Muntelbeekstraat to the right and continue to follow the yellow arrows, slightly rising.
At a solitary tree, you reach the ‘peak’ of Hasselt, this highest point is at 66 meters above sea level. Directly south is, on a clear day, the church of Borgloon (12 km) visible and at 150° (S.E.) Tongeren (18 km). If you have binoculars, you should definitely bring them!
Continue on your way, turn right for the vegetation, follow the yellow arrows. You may have to walk ‘through the corn’ here during the season. So stay on the paved path!
In a northern direction, from here, you see two windmills with white/red blades, they are 2 km away, along the Grote Ring around Hasselt.
Further along, you come to the chapel ‘F VOS’, this is one of the 25 ‘lucky spots’ for the Hasselt residents.
From here: left (yellow arrow) descending, (Sasput-Voogdijstraat and Sasput) back to the parking.
