Landscape
The name 'sand plain' refers to the origin of the Left Bank district. This area initially consisted of polders and was regularly flooded in the past. From the 16th century, the area was even flooded for decades for military reasons. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the entire flooded plain was reclaimed. At the end of the 19th century, the systematic elevation of the plain started in function of the development of the Left Bank. This caused a major change in the landscape. A thick layer of sand was laid on the fertile polder clay from, among other things, dredging works in the Scheldt and excavation work in the docks of the port.
