The province of Flemish Brabant is the smallest province in Flanders in terms of surface area, but you will find the most varied landscapes. You will notice that life is good in Brabant by the rich drinking culture during this walk.
The Brabantse west Trail is a solid walking route of 101 km in the province of Brabant (west) that you walk in one or more stages. This tour runs through beautiful meadows- forests - stream valleys, viewpoints and rapidly succeeding landscape changes. High-quality hiking experience, from the first to the last kilometer. The choice of attractive and largely unpaved paths guarantees this.
Asse The Old Hospital, the former Onze-Lieve-Vrouwgasthuis. The walk runs along the Waalborrepark with exceptional trees, The terraces on the market square of Asse are attractive under the watchful eye of the Hopduvel. The bronze statue symbolizes the storm wind that swept over the fields at the end of August and caused damage to the hop vines. The Hopduvel is the symbol for the storm wind that turns ugly at the end of August and until the seventies the numerous hoplochtings that the region of Asse-Ternat had, caused a lot of damage and slammed the hopper roofs to the ground. The 'Hopduvel' has become a household name among the people in the region of Asse, but was invented by the hop farmers and symbolized by the spiritual father of the Hopduvel festivals Eugeen van den Broeck. The Hopduvel festivities came as an opportunity to celebrate the burning of the hopduvel after the picking.
If one knows that Poperinge and the Aalst-Asse region accounted for an important part of the Belgian production of hops, then it is not surprising that - now that the hop fields have disappeared - the hop devil remains lord and master of the region. Every year hop shoots show off on the menu of many Assese restaurants, there is an annual hop market, numerous associations name themselves after him, the hop duvel statue on the market captivates Asse and people prepare themselves in time for the Hopduvel festivities.

Wemmel The views are wide here, so we are in Wemmel at an altitude between 50 and 70 meters. At the back left you can see the Atomium, the urbanized Wemmel and part of the Brussels skyline.
Wemmel This castle was a fortified moated castle in the Middle Ages, until it was converted into a pleasure castle by Filips Taye in 1649. In 1838 the castle was sold to Count Willem-Bernard de Limburg-Stirum, who had become mayor. Two of his daughters continued to live at the castle until 1926, after which their heirs donated it to the municipality. Since 1938, the castle has served as a town hall. https://www.toerismevlaamsbrabant.be/producten/wandelen/laermanswandeling

The Abbey of Affligem for a walk through the Koudenbergbeek valley, a municipal nature development area where nature gets every opportunity. Thanks to the varied subsoil – dry and wet, sandy loam and clay – you will find very rare nature here in a historically special place. https://abdijaffligem.wordpress.com
The Kravaalbos is a bit hidden on the border of two provinces, which kept it under the radar for a long time. That is also the greatest asset of this ecologically valuable forest today, where bluebells provide a colorful spectacle in the spring.
The Kravaalbos is about 80 hectares in size and is a remnant of the Great Coal Forest. So there has been forest here for thousands of years, although part of it was planted with production trees, such as American oak. In another part, native tree species and plants have always been able to grow, so the Kravaalbos has a valuable biotope. In the Middle Ages there was a sand quarry operation on the initiative of the Affligemse abbey. Quite a few churches in villages and towns as well as civil buildings were built with sandstone from the Kravaalbos between the 12th and 18th centuries. We pass the old quarry now a large pond, when leaving the Kravaalbos.
