Description by the author

The route starts in Opitter and quickly ascends to the Kempen Plateau along good paved bike paths through the forests.
West of Opoeteren, you descend to the Bosbeek valley, and gradually climb out of the valley towards the Dornerheide. At the height of Niel-bij-As, you come onto the bike path of a former railway line that takes you to As. From there, the route continues over excellent paved separate bike paths through and along the Mechelse Heide.

At Wiemesmeer, you return to public roads accessible to car traffic. The route bends west and goes south of Genk. Since the route passes through a nature area south of Genk, along an unpaved bike path (suitable for racing bikes) that is included in the bike route network (length: 1 kilometer), you don’t really enter the urban area of Genk. Through a quiet suburb (villa district) of Genk with wide avenues (partly bike street), the route goes through Nature Reserve De Maten and a stretch along the Albert Canal. You then pass through the village of Bokrijk and subsequently through Domain Bokrijk, eventually cycling through the water.

The return trip first goes along main roads with bike paths through forested areas, climbing up to the Schemmersberg. Around Zwartberg, these are bike paths directly along main roads (over a distance of 4 km). However, after that, it becomes rural again and you often cycle over good bike paths through forest areas to Gruitrode and Opglabeek. After Opglabeek, the landscape becomes even more hilly until you finally descend the Kempen Plateau back to Opitter.

In addition to "Cycling through the water" and "Cycling through the trees", Belgian Limburg now also has "Cycling on the heath". This is a long bridge that rises 6 meters above the landscape to provide you with a view of the heath area (location: between Zutendaal and Opgrimbie on the Road to Zutendaal). At the end of 2023/beginning of 2024, "Cycling over the water" will be realized at vacation park Terhills (between Lanklaar and Eisden-Tuinwijk) and is a floating bike path on a body of water. It will then be possible to include the following three bike projects in a round of 90 - 100 km (from Opitter): cycling through the water, cycling over the water, and cycling on the heath.
