Limburg Maas Route, stage 1: from Maastricht to Rekem

In the heart of both Limburgs, the Maas may form a wild river, 40 km long from Maastricht to Kessenich. The River Park has a varied landscape with a maze of old river arms, riverbanks, stream beds, gravel banks… Our guiding path is the marked Long-Distance Walk Maas Valley (137 km) but we regularly choose a prettier variant. The stages are chosen so that you can reach them by public transport.

This first stage departs from the station of Maastricht, taking you directly to the Maas and through the historical heart of this majestic city. At Borgharen we choose a footpath directly on the riverbank. In this place you can cross the Maas on foot in the summer. Past Smeermaas, we find ourselves in a nature feast full of wild herbs like water mint, common wormwood, and pepperwort, semi-wild cows, cormorants, herons, and many others. In Neerharen, we even encounter a herd of wild horses that calmly continue grazing as we pass by. Further on, we leave the river and reach Oud-Rekem, "the most beautiful village of Flanders".
