Learn more about the chapel of Our Lady of Intercession and walk through the hamlets of Driepikkel, Westvoorde, with the "Drongengoedbos" in the background. Enjoy the coastal landscape. Along quiet roads and shortcuts, you will return to the center of Knesselare.
Directions
Start at café-restaurant “De Litanie” and walk right towards Hellestraat (towards Beernem). At the intersection of De Plaats – Hellestraat, cross the street at the crosswalk. Then turn right until you reach the intersection of Hellestraat – Kwadamstraat. Next, take Kwadamstraat. Walk until the next intersection. There, turn left onto Hemelrijkstraat. Walk through the residential area and follow Hemelrijkstraat until you see the playground “Hemelrijk” on the right. Before that, you will see bike junction number 93 on the right. Along the path in the playground, walk to the place where you see a wall and several information panels.
Feel free to take some time to read these information panels. You will learn the story of the “famous Indian of Knesselare” and the cigar history of this village.
After that, continue along the path by the wall, a remnant of the former factory, towards the daycare, the former offices of the cigar factory. At the gate of the park, cross the street at the crosswalk and go left towards the church. At the intersection of Kerkstraat with Looierijstraat, turn right and follow Looierijstraat until the next intersection. To the left in this street, you can still see the remains of a mill ruin and an old tannery.
At the intersection of Looierijstraat – Aalterseweg, turn left towards the school “Klavertje vier”. At the school, cross at the crosswalk and continue left towards the intersection of Aalterseweg – Urselseweg (N337). At this intersection, turn right and follow the sidewalk. Continue on this road until you reach the next intersection of Urselseweg (N337) with Knokkebaan (N44). At the traffic lights, cross N44 and immediately turn right to reach the next exit via the bike path - sidewalk of N44, about 200 meters ahead. There, follow the Kleine Kapellestraat to the next intersection. At this intersection, you will find the former so-called “Capelle-Huyseken” and the chapel of Our Lady of Intercession. Feel free to go inside and read the story of the origin of the chapel and its huyseken. After that, cross the intersection and take Driesstraat. Along this street, you will pass the butcher shop “de Vleeshouwerij”. You will walk for a good kilometer until you reach the street “Driepikkel” on the left side of the road.
At the end of the street “Driepikkel”, turn left and follow Aardenburgse Heerweg. In the distance on the right, you can see the Koningsbos, which is part of the landscape park “Drongengoed”.
At the end of Aardenburgse Heerweg, cross Urselseweg (N461). Watch out for traffic and crossing deer! Then continue in Westvoordestraat (walking junction number 5) until you see a lane – slow road on your left: “Zandekensstraat” and on your right “Waterlopen”. Take Zandekensstraat (towards walking junction number 4) and continue until you reach a T-junction. Continue following Zandekensstraat until the next intersection. There, turn left onto Waterstraat. Continue on this street until the traffic lights. In this street, there is a small brewery “Geirn Meugen”. After crossing N44, turn left and immediately turn onto Maldegemseweg. Continue on this road until you reach the first street on your right, Heilige Sacramentsstraat. About 250 meters further on the left side of the street, you will find a shortcut, directly across from house number 21. Be careful! It is located between a house and a hedge. Follow this path until it ends up in the street “De Wijngaard”. Continue along this street until you reach Kouterweg.
There, cross Kouterweg and follow the path that is opposite to it and runs parallel to the fence of the house. This path leads to Koffiestraat. Then turn right. Continue on this street until you reach the intersection with Smissestraat. At this intersection, turn left and then take the next street on the right, “Drieselken”.
You are almost at the end of the walk. However, feel free to take some time to look at the back of the Sint-Willibrorduskerk, the former rectory. From the other side, you will return to “De Plaats”, the starting point of the walk.
