Description by the author

Pajottenland, Gaasbeek: departure from the Gaasbeek Castle car park KP 121-126-730-129-125-196-128-127-123-104-103-11-111-124-126-121

Distance 11 km

GAASBEEK CASTLE Godfrey of Leuven had a castle built here in 1236 to protect Brabant from incursions.

The castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times and thus evolved from a medieval defensive castle to a romantic residence. In the castle you can find a thousand precious objects such as furniture, carpets, paintings, many goldsmiths, stained glass windows and sculptures. In one of the wings of the museum you can admire the bathroom, bedroom and red room of the Marchioness Arconati Visconti.

Apart from a park with a 17th century pleasure pavilion, an old chapel and a triumphal arch in honour of Napoleon, the estate contains a beautiful museum garden with native fruits and vegetables.

GROENENBERG The 45-hectare park, owned by the Agency for Nature and Forest, extends around a small castle that a notary from Halle had built there around 1890. With its winding roads, curved forest edges and expansive lawns, the design is completely in line with the architecture of English gardens. The park is an oasis of silence, with beautiful collections of azalea, hydrangea and rhododendron plants. For more information on the Brabant draft horse's history, visit the prairie information panel.

The museum garden takes you back to the beautiful castle gardens dating back to around 1900. Take your time and walk through a strong example of living cultural heritage.

The garden houses a unique collection of ancient and rare fruit trees, "forgotten" vegetables and ornamental plants. The eye-catcher of the museum garden is the unique collection of fruit trees in the form of slate. A real open-air museum in which you can also see ancient cultivation and storage techniques.

Enjoy a magnificent view of Gaasbeek Castle and Pajottenland. Guests can relax in style in the enclosed French garden.
