The perfect ingredients for a unique cycling trip. Since April 2019, the new cycling junction network in the Center has been officially accessible. With 880 km of routes, you have plenty of options to explore this fascinating area by bike. One of our favorite rides is La Grande Boucle, the 'big loop' from La Louvière. Leave your car at one of the free parking areas in the city, and head towards the picturesque towpath along the Center Canal. Here, you are immediately treated to a remarkable spectacle: the first of the only four remaining original hydraulic boat lifts in the world. The ingenious lifts were built between 1882 and 1917 to facilitate coal transport. They are considered industrial monuments and proudly feature on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Make sure to take a moment to stop whenever you pass a lift to discover the structures up close. The Strépy-Thieu cable lift you will encounter shortly after is also worth a visit as the largest functioning boat lift in Europe. Feeling like stretching your legs afterward?
