The Ghent azalea is a recognized European regional product. No less than 80 percent of European azaleas are grown in Flanders, mainly around Lochristi and Beervelde. Between May and November, they can be found in the fields. Ornamental horticulture has dramatically changed the landscape. Where heathland existed until 1900, you now find fields full of colorful flowers, greenhouses, and brick water towers.
The route 'In the Heart of the Azalea Region' (41 km) departs from the Ornamental Horticulture Museum in Zaffelare with its immense flower garden. The museum is open every last weekend of the month or by appointment. You cycle past the beautiful Beervelde Park, among other places.
