In 2019, 450 years after the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca 1525 – 1569), the municipality of Dilbeek organized an outdoor exhibition featuring spatial and artistic interventions by internationally renowned artists and designers. This exhibition propelled Bruegel into the 21st century. The visitor followed the painter's gaze as he created his impressive landscape paintings.
This walk follows the same route with a few slight modifications. Four interventions remain in the landscape and can still be admired today. A highlight is certainly ‘Study for a windmill’ by the architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh.
In 1568 – the year before his death – Bruegel painted two works depicting buildings that still exist in Dilbeek: the chapel of Sint-Anna-Pede (Itterbeek) and the watermill of Sint-Gertrudis-Pede (Schepdaal). These two monuments form a starting or resting point for the walk of approximately 7 km. Enjoy this walk through the beautiful Pajotse nature, with elements from the present and the past.
