At the end of the 20th century, the Maas Valley was transformed into a cross-border nature park - River Park Maas Valley - that lazily stretches along the banks of the Maas. River Park Maas Valley is no less than 40 km long and serves as an immense playground for cyclists, walkers, and water sports enthusiasts. You can cycle or walk for hours along the dikes from village to village. We start at Hotel Porta Cité. Those who do not bring their own bike can rent an e-bike here. Our route is partially drawn along the South Willem Canal and partially along the winding banks of the Maas, which here forms the natural border with the Netherlands. Those wishing to visit our northern neighbors must cross the Maas by ferry. Anyone who wants can take the ferry from junction 52 towards Geulle on the Maas to grab a drink on the terrace before returning with the same ferry towards Belgium. Shortly thereafter, you cycle through Oud-Rekem, which was declared the Most Beautiful Village in Flanders by Tourism Flanders in 2007. Between junctions 550 and 551, we actually cycle into the Mechelse Heide (one of the gateways to the Hoge Kempen National Park). Here we pick up the brand new experience route "Cycling through the Heide". The new iconic bike bridge, nearly 300 meters long, offers a slightly magical view over the colorful heath landscape. At the end of our journey, we also visit the Terhill site, formerly known as Connecterra until last year. Terhills serves as the gateway to the Hoge Kempen National Park. Here you may find the most beautiful panorama of Flanders, thanks to several mining hills that have been transformed into wooded hilltops.
