Description by the author

GPS recording of 20 September 2021

During this easy and wooded walk you will leave at the beautiful Pietersheim Castle and walk through the moated castle. (IF THE MOATED CASTLE IS NOT ACCESSIBLE, PASS IT ON THE RIGHT !! THEN IT IS ALONG YOUR LEFT ) Via nice paths you come to the petting zoo and then you follow a plank path through a wet nature reserve. This is followed by a beautiful stretch on forest paths along the winding Asbeek. You pass a rough piece of grassland and past a riding school you come out of the forest. You walk around a pond. And goes through the domain of Pietersheim back to the castle. Bring your own provisions, there are few benches but there are tree trunks to sit on

Pietersheim Castle and Castle were the seat of the Lordship of Pietersheim. Remains of the 12th-century moated castle Pietersheim bear witness to a long history. Just outside the castle site, on the site of the former courtyard of the moated castle, stands 'Pietersheim Castle', which in its current neoclassical form dates back to the beginning of the 20th century.

The oldest archaeological evidence of a castle on this site dates from the last quarter of the 11th century, and the first quarter of the 12th century. It was not until 1227 that the lordship was first mentioned in writing and in 1292 there was mention of: our house in Pietersheim, with tower, inner and outer fortress. It was a moated castle of the ring wall type, which was destroyed in 1378 by troops from the prince-bishopric of Liège and Tongeren. The castle consisted of a polygonal outer wall, against which the buildings were situated on the inside. Eventually there were three concentric moats that surrounded the castle, including a fortified castle and chapel, and fortified entrances.
