Cycling between the tracks of "The Great War" 28 km.

We start on the edge of the Yser in Fintele (a hamlet of Lo-Reninge). Initially, the tour runs on the flat roads of the Ijzervlakte, but gradually we see the witness hills of the Heuvelland looming in the distance. Our final destination is Westouter, a real walking and cycling paradise: more and more people have discovered this region, and therefore it can be a bit busier on the terraces of the numerous cafes during a sunny weekend. However, once you leave the village bowl(s), the peace on the narrow roads and paths quickly returns. Along the way we pass numerous witnesses of the Great War: small soldiers' graveyards, memorial crosses, ... We flirt a few times with the French border and see in depth the French-Flemish hills near Cassel and Godewaersvelde (Mont des Cats, Mont des Récollets). The landscape is worthwhile everywhere and alternates between green forests and open undulating plains, strung together by winding agricultural roads where there is room for 1 car with difficulty. The St. Sixtus Abbey of Westvleteren (best known for its Westvleteren Trappist) is also on our itinerary. Although we end up in Heuvelland, no real calf-biters (à la Kemmelberg, Red Mountain, Black Mountain, ...) have to be conquered anywhere, because they are a little further south towards the French border.
