Description by the author

Instagram Walking route Dendermonde 7.3 km Large parts of the walk are accessible with wheelchairs and buggies (photo spots 1 to 8 and 17 to 25).

The unpaved paths are less suitable for wheelchairs.

By car?  At the De Bruynkaai car park you will find 300 free spaces. Cross the Noordlaan at the lights and you are at the starting point!

1 Wave at the Whale Tail De Groene Dender

The Groene Dender is one of the gateways to the city. A 10-meter-high whale tail, made from 10,000 PET bottles, attracts attention. The artwork refers to the whale from the Ros Beiaard ommegang, but also to the litter problem.

2 House of the horse Kazernestraat

The niches at the Ros Beiaard stable form a perfect photo frame.

3 Golden horse Grand Place

Scattered throughout the city center are 12 large horse heads. The impetus for this street art project was the fact that the mythical Ros Beiaard ommegang, which only takes place once every 10 years, had to be postponed due to the corona crisis

4 Become street art yourself Guldenhoofdstraat

Next to the golden head you can dive into the Guldenhoofdstraatje, but first: a photo!

5 Friendly giant Ridderstraat

And another golden head, very different but at least as photogenic. Strike a pose next to this giant, a reference to the three historic guild giants of Dendermonde.

6 World Class Kerkstraat 111

The interplay of lines of the modern library building offers many possibilities for those who like a tight composition. The building was included in the book 'Masterpieces: Library Architecture & Design' with the 69 most beautiful bibs in the world.

7 Love is all Rainbow bench at the Tragel

On the banks of the Dender is a rainbow bench, a realization of two students from the Oscar Romero college who raise awareness about LGBT sexuality with their final work. A nice initiative and a nice photo motif!

8 In your sas Pedestrian and bicycle bridge Oude Sas

Take a picture with the wind in your hair on the Sasbrugje. I'm king of the wooooorld!

9 Green oasis Brussels Forts

The Brussels Forts: a pond of no less than 5 hectares that is part of the former defensive belt around the city. Today a green wonder country and a beloved place for fishermen.

10 Go for geometry New Quarter

The angular shapes of the artwork Cubes contrast nicely with the organic environment. The light always plays differently with the transpa rante covering of the cubes.

11 Sit Back & Relax Mural Zuidlaan

Franz Courtens was a 19th century Dendermond landscape painter. In 2018, his death was commemorated with a citywide art project. Instead of capturing the landscape on canvas, 6 artists used the landscape itself as a canvas this mural is by Joachim.

12 Traces of the former Brussels Gate, Leopoldlaan

Traces of the former fortress around Dendermonde can be found all over the landscape. Sometimes the shape of a watercourse subtly betrays history. The Brussels Gate is an outspoken witness and a protected monument.

13 The big guns Powder magazine Stadspark

At the Brussels Gate there is a powder magazine, in which the city guards kept their ammunition. Also further on, at the level of the Mechelse Poort, is a powder maga. The latter also houses a bat enclosure.

14 Exotic vibes Bridge Olympos

Have you travelled to an exotic destination? A photo on this beautiful bridge will make your followers doubt

15 Smile your teeth bare Tiki on Kalendijk

A dead poplar was given a new life here as a striking Tiki. The totem pole is located on the Tikipad, a 600 meter long walk on a child's scale, with fun activities.

16 All bunches loose Jetty next to Swimming Pool Olympos

Settle down on this wooden jetty and fish for compliments. Bet you have bite? ;)

17 Big Cité Life Lindanusstraat

In the 19th century, Dendermon was a thriving industrial city. These workers' houses were built 17 in 1888 and form a
of the last remaining cités in Dendermonde.

18 Telephone at the ready Mural Nijverheidsstraat 29

This mural also dates from the commemorative year for Dendermond painter Franz Cour 18 tens. The Ghent illustrator Joëlle Dubois likes to investigate the impact of social media in her work. An Instaspot we couldn't skip!

19 Kunstige galerij Zwijvekemuseum, Nijverheidsstraat 3-5

This colonnade is a remnant of the former Zwijveke abbey site. Today it houses the Zwijveke museum, dedicated to the history of Dendermonde in the 19th and 20th centuries.

20 Go rococo Nijverheidsstraat 3-5

The former entrance gate to the Zwijveke Abbey, a gate from 1755 in rococo style, is a protected monument and a monumental motif.

21 All eyes on you Zwijvickstraat

More than one beautiful background in the Zwijvickstraat. This window with stained glass window looks like a porthole.

22 Color in the city Heroes' Square

Do you have mini Instagram models with you? Then you should not miss the colored cylinder on the Heldenplein.

23 A piece of heaven Sint-Alexiusbegijnhof

The SintAlexiusbegijnhof is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jump inside the Beguinage Museum and go back in time. Or take a photo at the ornamental and herb garden. Here you are guaranteed to find heavenly inspiration!

24 Maverick Art Deco, Dijkstraat 1

Dendermonde was largely destroyed in WWI. After that, 24 pre-reconstruction architecture was chosen. The architects therefore did not opt for the then very innovative Art Deco. This makes this architectural gem, a restaurant aptly named Art Deco, an outsider in the city

25 Elegant centenarians Koningin Astridlaan

The Koningin Astridlaan is the school example of the reconstruction architecture in Dendermonde. The row of stepped gables is so long that you can safely go for an Instagram Reel here: just keep walking!
