The walk, part of the IJzervallei hiking network, has been slightly modified by Westtoer and is now 7 km long, the old version of 7.8 km is still mentioned on the information board in the info hut / shelter at the start of the walk. This GPS walk, 70% unpaved, is the regular version plus the old part that runs around the Dead Yser. The Westtoer walk can be followed with the hexagonal signs but can also be followed with junctions 3/2/1/96/54/53/52/3/4/5/2/3. Parking at the bridge over the IJzer in the Bergenstaat.

The walk runs along the border or schreve with France which is formed by the Zwijnbeek, Heidebeek and the IJzer. Paths through meadows and fields, along church roads and over several bridges. In the past, these paths were used by the smugglers. It should also be remembered that the Yser Valley was the battleground in the First World War.
