Haltinne - along the works of art of La fête de mai

This route starts at the church of Haltinne, a sub-municipality of Gesves, where there is parkingnear the rest bench.

The inhabitants of the area led their children to believe that an "ogre" was buried there, a fairytale giant who, according to tradition, feeds on the fresh flesh of children...

Past the cemetery we go down a small descent along a 'sentier public' and arrive at the lime kiln of Ponciat. We see a row of trees full of mistletoes. After a steep climb we descend back to a stream. We go through a first artwork of 'La fête de mai', 'Ode to the draft horse'. After a fairly long climb we can rest on a bench. The route then goes down continuously, first through the forest and over a few streams. On the way we pass the remains (read: the nameplates) of a few more works of art that have not stood the test of time.

You have to be careful at a meadow on the right: you have to take the wooden stairs over the fence to the right, via a marked 'sentier public'. A little further on we see another work of art, 'Die hutte'. We follow the tractor track and arrive at the other side of the meadow where we pass the fence in the same way. We descend further to arrive along the castle farm at the entrance gate of the majestic castle of Haltinne. These wrought iron ports used to be for Ciergnon Castle, but King Leopold II refused them.

Via the moats we arrive at the archaeological site "Sense de Leschy" where remains have been found of the first human settlement in Haltinne that took the form of a stilt house in Merovingian times.

A last work of art, 'Conjonction', is suffering from the consequences of the archaeological excavations since 2010 ...
