Maur has an area of 14.8 km2 . Of this area, 52.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 26.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 20.2% is settled and the remainder is non-productive . In 1996 housing and buildings made up 14.9% of the total area, while transportation infrastructure made up the rest . Of the total unproductive area, water made up 0% of the area. As of 2007 17% of the total municipal area was undergoing some type of construction.
The municipality is located on the south-west shore of the Greifensee. It includes the village of Maur and the settlements of Aesch, Scheuren , Binz, Ebmatingen and Uessikon.
