Kesswil is first mentioned in 817 as Chezzinwillare. In the 9th Century, the Abbey of St. Gall owned land in Kesswil. In the 13th Century, Münsterlingen Abbey acquired rights over the town. From the Late Middle Ages until 1798, Kesswil was under the courts of the Abbot of St. Gall.
In 1429 the monastery of Münsterlingen allowed the construction of a chapel. In 1529 the parish converted to the Protestant Reformation.
