Bellinzona (Italian: Bellinzona, French: Bellence, German: Bellenz, Latin: Bilitio) is the capital of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.
The municipality is situated at an elevation of 238 meters, has 17,286 inhabitants (Dec. 2004), and covers 1984 hectares (19.84 km²).
The city lies east of the river Ticino, which gave the canton its name. The city of Bellinzona is a transport hub from which the Alpine passes of St. Gotthard, Lukmanier, San Bernardino, and Nufenen can be reached.
In 1475, the city was mentioned for the first time in a document by the Duke of Milan.
Among the sights are the three castles of the city, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. There are several museums and churches.
