Santa Maria Val Müstair is a former municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and is located in the Reto-Romanic Val Müstair. In addition to the main village, the municipality includes the small mountain villages of Sielva, Pizzet, Pütschai, Craistas, and Büglios. The highest point of the municipality is the 3033 meter high Piz Umbrail, which rises to the west of the Umbrail Pass.
A majority of 70% of the population speaks the Reto-Romanic language; however, the number is declining, as 81% spoke this ancient language in 1970. The most important building in the center is the village church dating back to 1492.
Santa Maria Val Müstair is an important transportation hub. To the east, the road leads towards the Italian Merano and the Reschen Pass. To the south of the village lies the 2501 meter high Umbrail Pass, and to the west of Santa Maria lies the Ofen Pass, which connects with the Engadin.
