Wettingen Reservoir

The Wettingen reservoir is a reservoir on the Limmat River in the Swiss canton of Aargau and serves the operation of the Wettingen power plant. The lake is located in the Limmattal valley between the towns of Würenlos and Wettingen on the right riverbank and Killwangen and Neuenhof AG on the left riverbank.
The reservoir was completed in 1933. The power plant is located above the wooden bridge near the Wettingen monastery and 50 meters above the railway bridge. It is operated by the municipal electricity company of Zurich. The first concession for the power plant was valid until 2013. Since larger renovation works were necessary around the turn of the millennium, and the investment costs of 60 to 70 million francs were not justifiable given the short remaining term of the concession, EWZ applied for an extension of the concession in 1998. This concession was granted for 80 years with environmental conditions by the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau on January 16, 2001. Some of the bank reinforcements below the power plant had to be removed, and the 600-meter-long fish ladder Fishpass Power Plant Wettingen was built to bridge the dam wall.
