The Gasterntal, also known as Gasterental or Gasteretal, is a valley near Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland. It is traversed by the Kander river. The rear valley basin is located at an altitude of about 1600 m, while the valley exit is about 1350 m high. The valley is inhabited only during the summer months.
Gasteren means the same as to spend the night in the Kandersteg dialect. In the past, Selden, the rear part of the valley, was inhabited year-round; two inns provided accommodation and meals for travelers crossing the Lötschenpass.
