The Casino Interlaken is located in the Kursaalgarten of Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland. It was founded in 1858, but was only able to exist for one year until the legal ban on gambling in the Canton of Bern. After a tumultuous history of other uses, it received a B-license in 2001 as part of the new Swiss casino legislation, along with 22 other Swiss casinos, and was reopened on July 3, 2002.
In 1858, 33 private individuals acquired the approximately 14-hectare site of the former medieval Augustinian monastery inter lacus, which had been dissolved during the Reformation; the land had been in the possession of the municipality since 1528. They laid out a promenade through the area, where hotels and parks extended. This complex constituted the former spa and today's congress center, which also included the casino.
