The Grottos of Saint-Brais are three caves located at the interface of the Freiberge high plateau and the western end of the Delsberg basin in the Swiss Jura, between 950 and 1000 m above sea level, northeast of the village of Saint-Brais. The caves were visited by humans from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age and were examined by Frédéric-Edouard Koby from 1935 to the 1960s.
The Grotto Saint-Brais I, with a total area of more than 200 m², has two entrances. The southern one leads to two tunnels, one of which ends at the western entrance. Koby discovered here flint tools from the Middle Paleolithic, bones of cave bears, and some blades from the Late Ice Age, as well as traces of hearths. In the eastern tunnel, a large Neolithic hearth was encountered along with some small ceramic shards. Above the Neolithic horizon, fragments of a male skull were found in a younger layer. The most fruitful discoveries came from the Bronze Age. More than 800 ceramic shards, a bronze bracelet, and grinding stones indicate a longer use of the cave.
