With its roots in the 19th century, the Natural History Museum of Bern is one of the oldest in Switzerland. It is known for its many dioramas, which showcase mounted animals in recreations of their natural environment. There are departments dedicated to reptiles, birds, and mammals from Africa, Asia, and the South Pole, but the most impressive are the displays featuring fauna from the Alps. Also on display is the mounted body of Barry, a St. Bernard dog who was famous for his rescues in the Alps in the 19th century. The museum also has a large collection of minerals and fossils from the Alps.
