High above Saas-Balen lies a magnificent place where not many hikers go to but is definitely worth a visit! Why you ask? Well, the Grüebugletscher that lies between the Fletschhorn (3985m) and Inner Rothorn (3455m) makes it's way down to Gruëbusee, a mountain lake formed by the glacier with thick icy walls that go directly into the lake. It's a truly magnificent view with an amazing background of high Alpine mountains.
Duration: 5h
Difficulty: T2
Starting point is Saas-Grund where you'll take the ski lift to Kreuzboden. The hike can also be started from Saas-Balen but that would be a bit too much for a one day hike and too much elevation. Although this hike starts at Kreuzboden, it is still 20,4km in length with an elevation of 940m.
When arriving at Kreuzboden, you'll take the path to the left in the direction of Grüebe / Saas-Balen (High trail). The big road quickly evolves in a small hiking trail along the border side of the Jegihorn mountain. A very rocky section awaits making it a bit more adventurous. Enjoy the views here over the Saastal valley and follow the high trail until you reach a farm on your right side. You'll turn right to the farm and pass it along the right, over the bridge that leads to a big road up the mountain. This is the most boring part of the hike and takes some time before you'll get all the way up. This route is not marked, although there where a few blanc yellow arrow signs but further nothing. When you come at a split in the road, you can visit Fellsee, another mountain lake at the right but it is not very much worth a visit. We keep left and still follow the big road up the mountain. Once over 2800m you'll finally see Grüebusee, Fletchhorn and surrounding mountains, be amazed by it's beauty. The big road stops above the two lakes, now be careful here! You can get at the lake and glacier but you'll have to find a way through an eroded path and rocky sections. Also be aware depending on the time that these parts can be covered with snow as well so always watch your step. It's a perfect place for a picnic and enjoy the calmness at the lake, stones falling in the lake and small icebergs in the cold lake.
To return, we'll follow the same way back, you can return to Saas-Balen and take a bus as well but be aware that Saas-Balen is a long way down.
