Did you know that China's rise has presented big problems for donkeys. Donkey hides are an ingredient in ejiao. That's a popular medicine purported to dull pain, treats acne, prevents cancer and above all, improves the libido. The demand for ejiao resulted in a huge demand for donkeys. Prices for donkeys quadrupled in Tajikistan. Export bans have been introduced in Niger, Burkina Faso and elsewhere in Africa, because the lack of donkeys for the local market has threatened to destabilise the agrarian economy in these countries.
