Ludwig van Beethoven came to Teplice a number of times where he enjoyed the spas and health resorts. While staying here in June 1812, he wrote a passionate letter to an anonymous woman: the Unsterbliche Geliebte . It is suspected that this letter was addressed to Antonie Brentano. Beethoven had met the Brentanos through another cultural giant: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Brentanos were in Teplice at the same time. Goethe also arrived in Teplitz on July 14 or 15, after which he met Beethoven on July 19. They were in daily contact for the next week, until Beethoven traveled to the Brentanos and stayed at their home in Carlsbad.
