The German-Czech-Polish border triangle is a witness to the changes that Central Europe has undergone over the last 70 years. It was first created in 1945 on the basis of the Potsdam Treaty. At that time, the border between Germany and Poland was moved westwards to the Oder-Neisse line. The border triangle was inaccessible for years afterwards. The state borders, although borders of friendly states of the former Eastern Bloc, were closed and well guarded. The situation only changed after 1989 with the opening of new border crossings. Only since then has nothing stood in the way of a visit to this symbolic place.
In 2004, the Dreiländerpunkt was witness to the "Sternstunde Europas", the great celebration of the enlargement of the European Union. The process of opening the border was completed in 2007, when the Czech Republic and Poland joined the Schengen area at the same time. The Czech-Polish border can be crossed via a footbridge over the Ullersbach stream. Until recently, the banks of the Neisse were connected by the Sky Bridge, which was located 200 meters downstream from the border crossing point, but was demolished due to its poor technical condition. The towns of Hrádek nad Nisou, Zittau and Bogatynia are currently working on the construction of a circular bridge directly above the confluence of the two watercourses.
