Even before Oberhausen, the former draught horse of the German economy makes itself known to the traveller with a panorama of chimneys, factory complexes and the Gasometer Oberhausen. This steel colossus, which stands right next to the highway, has a diameter of 61 meters and is 117 meters high. It spans a space in which you can even hide the Utrecht Cathedral. The interior of the Gasometer is spectacular. There are windows in the roof that let in daylight that then explodes on the walls. If you gaze at the sky in the 'gas bottle' below, you get a wonderful experience: while walking, the ceiling remains still, making the space seem infinite.
