The Sorpe dam was built between 1927 and 1935 and is 61 meters in height. It is an earth dam.
During Operation Chastise, it was planned that this dam, together with two other dams would be destoyed. The goal was to ''block'' the production in the Ruhr region. The Möhne and Sorpe lakes poured around 330 million tons of water into the western Ruhr region. Mines would be flooded and houses, factories, roads, railways and bridges destroyed as the flood waters spread for around 80 km from the source.
Only two Lancasters (bombers) reached the Sorpe, but could not destroy the dam.
