It belongs to the Werdenfelser Land along with Garmisch-Partenkirchen as the administrative center and cultural hub, as well as other municipalities. A few kilometers away, the German-Austrian border runs to the south.
Wallgau, together with Krün and Mittenwald, forms the tourism association Alpenwelt Karwendel, which markets the region year-round as a starting point for sports and leisure activities such as hiking and cross-country skiing. The municipality has around 1,400 inhabitants.
