Grabau was first mentioned in documents in 1433. Mesolithic finds indicate the initial settlement of the area. The Grabau burial site points to a settlement during the Bronze Age. Over time, it became the manorial estate of Gut Borstel. After the Borsteler estate was sold in 1804, Grabau was separated and elevated to an independent noble estate. In 1863, the town received its first school. In 1907, Grabau was connected to the railway through the Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldeslo railway, which was closed again in 1973. After the dissolution of the manor districts, Grabau was merged with Neritz into a rural community. In 1942, the merger of Grabau and Neritz was reversed, and both villages became independent municipalities.
Since 1948, Grabau has belonged to the Amt Bad Oldesloe-Land. Due to the settlement of lands from the estate, the population has steadily increased since then.
