Schwepnitz is a municipality in the West Lausitz region in northern Saxony, about 12 kilometers northwest of the town of Kamenz and around 35 kilometers northeast of Dresden. It is located between Königsbrück and Bernsdorf along the water divide. To the west of Schwepnitz lies the Königsbrück Heath with the former military training area Königsbrück.
The name of the village is derived from the Old Sorbian Svepeťnica, referring to a brook that flows through a forest with beehives, and probably originates from the second period of settlement by the Slavs. However, the first written record dates back only to 1343.
