The municipal area includes Affegünt, Bremsdieck, Dallacker, Düttnis, Gunneby, Hestoft, Kius, Knappersfeld, Ulsnis, Ulsniskirchenholz, and Ulsnisland. 1.5 km west of Kius is the forest area Kiuser Gehege. In its current form, the municipality has existed since 1974.
The place Ulsnis was first mentioned in 1349 as Vlfsnees. The present districts of Ulsnis, Hestoft, Kius, and two farms from Gunneby belonged to the administrative district of Ulsnis after 1509, which was under the jurisdiction of the Cathedral Chapter in Schleswig. The Bishop of Schleswig purchased these lands along with the farms on them from the last non-ecclesiastical owner of the estate Hesselgaard in 1504. Until then, the residents were subjects of the lords of Hesselgaard. This set Ulsnis apart from other parts of Angeln, which was characterized by its free farmers on the Bondegütern. In 1770, the Cathedral Chapter was dissolved, and subsequently, some local farmers were allocated land, including shares of forest areas. Ulsnis became part of the adjacent Harde.
