The state-recognized resort is located at about 700 m above sea level in a wooded area. Directly near Grünbach rises the Wendelstein, a quartzite cliff. In the district of Muldenberg, the Zwickauer Mulde is dammed to create the Muldenberg drinking water reservoir. The highest point of the municipality is located about 842 m above sea level on the western slope of the Kiel mountain.
Adjacent municipalities are Muldenhammer, Neustadt, Falkenstein/Vogtl., Klingenthal, Schöneck/Vogtl. and Zwota.
