Altenmünster came to the monastery of Ellwangen in the 9th century, then in 1262 to the monastery of Oberschönenfeld of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg. Zusamzell belonged to the Augsburg Cathedral Foundation. Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place has belonged to Bavaria.
As part of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipality of Altenmünster was established with the municipal edict of 1818. From 1862 to 1929, Altenmünster belonged to the district office of Zusmarshausen and from 1929 to the district office of Wertingen, which was then referred to as the district of Wertingen from 1939.
