Großolbersdorf is a forest village in the central part of the Ore Mountains, with a rough east-west orientation. It is located in the natural area of the Central Ore Mountains.
To the east, it borders the Bornwald and extends to the Zschopautal in the west. To the north, the town of Zschopau borders the area, and to the south the town of Wolkenstein.
The highest point of the locality is the Zeisighübel at an elevation of 642 m, and the lowest point is the Zschopau at 358 m.
