Emden is a city in the German state of Lower Saxony, located at the Ems River. It is the largest city in the region of East Frisia and has the westernmost seaport in Germany. As a district-free city, Emden does not belong to a Landkreis. The city played an important role in Dutch history as a refuge for persecuted Protestants at the beginning of the Eighty Years' War. Emden originated around 800 as a trading settlement (Amuthon) on a terp by the Ems and became the capital of the East Frisian County of Emsgo in the 12th century.
At the end of the 16th century, Emden experienced a period of great prosperity. Due to the Spanish blockade of Dutch ports at the beginning of the Dutch revolt, Emden became the most important transshipment port on the North Sea.
