Willmars

Willmars is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld and a member of the administrative community of Ostheim vor der Rhön. The eponymous main village is the seat of the municipal administration.

Willmars belonged to the Counts of Botenlauben, a branch of the Counts of Henneberg. Count Otto II of Henneberg-Botenlauben ceded the village to the Abbey of Fulda in 1230. Through pledging, it came to the Counts of Henneberg-Römhild and was acquired in 1453 by the Henneberg-Schleusingen line and annexed to the Amt of Maßfeld. After their extinction in 1583, the village became part of the Duchy of Saxony. From 1680 it belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen. One half of the village was Saxon in lordship, while the other half was owned by co-owners who belonged to the Imperial Knights. Ober- and Unterfilke as well as Völkershausen belonged to the Imperial Knights until 1803.
